Where and how do I register a boat in Australia?

In Australia, it is generally mandatory to register your boat, especially if it is used on public waters. Registration requirements may depend on the type, size, and purpose of the boat. Each state or territory in Australia may have its own rules and procedures for vessel registration. I recommend checking local regulations and consulting with the relevant maritime authority or port authorities for specific requirements in your area.

In Western Australia, you can register your boat through the Western Australia Department of Transport. You have the option to visit their local offices or find information online on their official website. How to register or renew a recreational boat or watercraft in WA.

Any recreational craft that is or can be propelled by mechanical power, including sailboats, must be registered in order to operate it in Western Australian waters.

All recreational vessels in navigable waters, including vessels in moorings, enclosures or moored at jetties, must be registered regardless of how often they are used.

It is an offense to use or have a vessel in any navigable waters without a current registration.

Vessel registration lasts for 12 months and must be renewed annually – if you wish to continue using your vessel on the water.

Vessels exempt from registration

You do not need to register:

  • sailing vessels that cannot carry a motor
  • canoes, surf skis and other craft without motors
  • tender vessels no more than 3.1 metres long
    1. with a motor not bigger than 5hp (3.73 kW)
    2. used only as a lifeboat and for ship to shore transport, and for no other purpose
    3. displaying the registration number of the parent vessel.

New to recreational boating

In the Northern Territory (NT), you don’t need to hold a licence to operate a recreational boat.

You don’t have to register your boat.

However, you must know the boat laws in the NT.  You may be prosecuted if you do not obey these laws.

Before taking to the water, you should read the safety guide for recreational boating.

You should also consider installing a marine radio on your recreational boat.

I recommend contacting local port authorities or the relevant maritime authority in the area for precise requirements and procedures.

Where and how do I register a boat in Queensland?

In Queensland, you can register your boat through the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads. Contact the local port authorities or visit the official website of this department for specific information on boat registration, including required documents and procedures.

All boats – including personal watercraft (PWC) – with an engine of 3kW or more must be registered when on the water in Queensland.

Unless your boat is used exclusively for private recreation or is owned by a school, surf lifesaving club or other community group, you will need to obtain a commercial registration .

Special rules apply to the registration of tenders and boats with international or overseas registration.

How to register your boat or PWC

Register your boat at a Transport and Motor Service Center or, if you live in a rural area, you can visit a QGAP office , Magistrates’ Court or local police station that provides registration services.

If your boat is 15m or more (PDF, 55KB) — an application for a new registration, transfer of ownership or change of boat details must be approved by Maritime Safety Queensland before the registration is processed by Transport and Main Roads. Email your completed Queensland Regulated Vessel Registration Application (F3525) to Maritime_Standards@tmr.qld.gov.au for approval, or submit your application to a Transport and Motoring Customer Service Center or, if you live in a rural area, to QGAP office, Magistrate Court or local police station that provides registration services.
